Forget me not: Ever since I cleaned my room,
You are awesome to have a heart for your community and volunteering.
Don’t get discouraged and keep trying. Have you thought about starting your own volunteer event? http://www.houseparty.com/event/createthegood
there’s a lovely little space for me to work out. Who needs hot yoga when my entire apartment is burning. This weather is killing me! But I’d still rather this than the cold. I’ve been lacking in the exercise department lately. I let being sick turn me into a wuss. That’s going to change now that…
I'll feel infinite one day.: Volunteer Nurse.
On behalf of everyone, thank you for being a volunteer to save lives. There can be no greater cause.
Life as a volunteer nurse really needs dedication and compassion, dedication to work and compassion for other people. Seriously, life as a volunteer nurse is tiring as in TIRING and you work for FREE. You work for 8 hours or more because you are not allowed to go until, the next shift comes in….
Life is short….live your Dream, wear your Passion!
What does it mean to be a “philanthropist”?
phi·lan·thro·py/fəˈlanTHrəpē/Noun
1. The desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed esp. by the generous donation of money to good causes.
3 Lessons From A Volunteer
I did something that I normally would’ve not done. I answered a Craigslist ad for a volunteer.
How It Happened
I realized that I had some free time in the late afternoon, and wanted to see if there would be any quick-hit or micro-volunteer opportunities. Someone mentioned that Craigslist might be a good resource for that type of stuff, so that’s the first place I checked.
I read through many potential opportunities, but an opportunity to read to an elderly disabled verteren (Art) struck a chord with me. His daughter (Sherri) put up the ad, and also a link to her father’s story. You can find out more about Art at Sherri’s blog: https://sites.google.com/site/wordswithgrace/family/dad-s-bio
I exchanged emails in quick succession with Sherri, and made plans to meet that afternoon. Quick and easy process.
Meet & Greet
When I first met Art, I was amazed how quickly we just got talking. Before the encounter, I was worried that we’ll have nothing to really talk about, but since the opportunity is for reading, I was prepare for all reading, no conversations.
However, my experience was completely different. He immediately began talking about the tomato garden that he has, the work that he’s been putting into it, the different place he has lived, and the types of books that he likes to read.
Within 1 hour, I got a tour of his building and his room, created a tomato plant support stick (I know nothing about gardening, but did some hammering), received hand-on introduction to his tomato plants, and briefly discussed his political views and book preferences.
We agreed that going forward, we’ll meet on Thursday afternoons and chat/read for 1 hour. I’m certainly looking forward to it, and I hope to make a long life friend.
3 Lessons
- There are volunteer opportunities all around you/me. We just need to have an open mind and the guts to respond to the need.
- Your time is valuable to others. I can use my 1 hour to watch a TV show, surf the web, or read an interesting book with Art. I know most of us would do the latter.
- Be prepared for it to change your life. I know that my view on life has tweak for the better because of Art.

As I was exploring the idea of local community activism and volunteerism, I discovered ‘time banking’. It is a very interesting idea to combine volunteerism with time currency to augment the economic paper currency system(s).
In the video, you’ll hear Edgar Cahn, the founder of TimeBanks.org, speak at a TEDx event. His talk is enlightening and has opened my eyes to what can be possible within local communities.
For a quick overview of timebanking system, see this coverage from “Good Morning America”.

I recommend you guys volunteer! I raised $150 dollars towards the new children’s hospital today and I feel amazing :) I can’t wait to change lives by the millions in the near future!
You are awesome! Did you know that if only 1% of americans raised $150, that’ll be $3.1 million dollars?
We want to help!
Plus I was with him all day!
Beautiful Obscurities: Volunteering ?!
This would be a perfect Heartmob!
So I’m really wanting to help out St. Jude Children’s Hospital in some way, but I’m not sure as to what yet. I thought about possibly doing a fundraiser / bake sale.
I also found out that they have this Great Urban Race in Minneapolis at the end of July. You pay to be a part of the race and you…
I’m thinking about volunteering
We think many people are in this situation. We’re gonna try to find a solution!
… but I don’t know where to start.
Not that I don’t know any organisations or initiatives but it’s hard for me to find that one cause I want to give a helping hand to. There are so many and every job seems like a big responsibility.
I might just do a little volunteering in a library for starters and maybe next summer I’ll look out for more suiting jobs. I don’t know but I sure want to help out somewhere.
